Nigeria loses N7.5bn to cyber fraud yearly

Nigeria has been pitched among countries that lose yearly to cyber fraud. The country is said to have  lost well over N 7.5billion  in 2012 owing to cybercrime, while the global loss is estimated at $1trillion (about N155 trillion) for 2012. According to the research by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the rising profile of cybercrime is causing great havoc globally. The report also maintained that out of the $1 trillion loss, only $390 billion was reported for obvious reasons.

Following this disclosure, Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan,  will lead about 700 leaders including Mr. Ehud Barak, a former Prime Minister of Israel, Dr. Salma Abbasi, founder/CEO eWorldWide, USA, a high level team both from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)  to the third World Cyber security Conference next week in Abuja.

Among the 700 select leaders include top government functionaries, state governors and National Assembly members. Also expected are CEOs of Corporate Nigeria, Military and Intelligence chiefs and the diplomatic community, among others. The cyber security conference will map out new strategies to secure government and business assets, personal security including Child Online Protection and online e-commerce transaction on the cyberspace.

With the theme: ‘Cyber Insecurity- A latent threat to national security and economic development’. Dame Jonathan, who is also the ITU-IMPACT champion on child online protection (COP), would host the global forum as part of her yearly programmed for Nigeria and the entire World with regards to Child Online Protection and  cyber security. She has been working actively with stakeholders to ensure minors are protected on the internet especially from online predators and the cashless economy on CBN policy is strengthened.

Mr. Brahima Sanou, ITU Director, Telecommunication Development Bureau, ITU will speak on The Role of Telecommunication and ICT in National Security and Development. While renowned Technologist and global authority on sustainable development and cyber security, Salma Abbasi, Ph. D will speak  on: Living in the Digital Society: challenges, threats and solutions for the child.

Police: 'Beware of phishing calls'

Residents in Coolbaugh, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock townships and Mount Pocono Borough have reported receiving phishing calls, said Pocono Mountain Regional Police.

“Phishing” refers to someone contacting a resident via phone, requesting credit card and/or bank account information and asking the resident to send money for any of various reasons.
Police said residents have reported three types of phishing calls.

The first type involves a caller claiming to be a relative in trouble and requesting money for bail, legal fees or transportation. The second involves a caller claiming to be a public utility company, telling the resident their account is past due and threatening to terminate service.

The third involves a caller identifying the resident by name, telling them they have won money in some form of lottery.

Police advise residents who’ve gotten such calls to protect themselves by not releasing any personal financial information and contacting their relatives and utility companies to verify if there are any problems. Residents can also report such calls to the Federal Trade Commission and Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office’s Bureau of Consumer Protection at 800-441-2555.

Abney and Associates: Kan Larry Summers spelen leuk met andere toezichthouders?

Als Zomers vertelde een Senaat comité, verwijzen naar zijn conflict met Brooksley Geboren via regulering derivaten: "Wij begrijpen de ernst van dit voorstel. Op de vraag een onafhankelijk agentschap-concept van haar bevoegdheid en wetgeving voor te stellen die tijdelijk beperken het vermogen tot handelen is niet iets dat we zomaar. We evenwel geconcludeerd dat een dergelijke wettelijke regeling noodzakelijk was."

De afgelopen twee weken hebben gezien een stortvloed van commentaren op de relatieve merites van Larry Summers en Janet Yellen als potentiële kandidaten voor de volgende voorzitter van de Federal Reserve. Een aantal van de kritieken Larry Summers is afkomstig uit zijn rol in 1990s deregulering van financiën. Zijn strijd met Brooksley Geboren van de CFTC over de regulering van derivaten met name opvalt.

Mensen al een sterke meningen over Summers' schuld voor de financiële crisis als gevolg van zijn verleden steun van deregulering. Maar wat ontbreekt is de mate waarin hij heeft geprobeerd de ondermijnen en een onafhankelijke regelgevende instantie bepaalde dat hij niet eens met hen. Als de volgende Federale Reserve voorzitter, die zal enorme macht van de regelgevende instanties, niet eens met een andere financiële toezichthouders tijdens de uitvoering van Dodd-Frank , zal hij of zij gaan ze net zo hard?

Zoals gedocumenteerd in de PBS Frontline episode De Waarschuwing, evenals de Washington Post, in mei 1998 Brooksley geboren, toenmalige voorzitter van de CFTC, aangekondigd dat zij zou opstellen en versturen een concept versie paper onderzoekt de nieuwe en snelgroeiende markt in een speciale soort afgeleide bekend als een swap.

De openbaar toegankelijke overeenkomsten bieden een venster op pogingen van AMERIKAANSE ambtenaren met behoud van hun vermogen om controle via de glasvezel netwerken die een grote meerderheid van de wereldbevolking spraak- en internetverkeer.

De overeenkomsten, met als voornaamste doel is om de AMERIKAANSE telecommunicatie netwerken tegen buitenlandse spionage en andere acties die schadelijk kan nationale veiligheid, niet toestaan dat toezicht. Maar ze zorgen ervoor dat wanneer DE AMERIKAANSE overheid toegang willen verschaffen tot de enorme hoeveelheden gegevens die via hun netwerken, hebben de ondernemingen systemen in plaats van veilig, zeggen personen bekend met de aanbiedingen.

Onderhandelingsposities afkomstig zou zijn uit een schijnbaar alledaagse regering macht: het gezag van de FCC (Federal Communications Commission) om kabel keur vergunningen. Bij het afsluiten van deals waarbij een buitenlandse vennootschap, wil zeggen dat de mensen die vertrouwd zijn met het proces, de FCC heeft gehouden tot goedkeuring voor vele maanden terwijl de squadron van advocaten nagesynchroniseerd Team Telecom ontwikkelde security overeenkomsten die verder ging dan wat nodig is door de wetgeving inzake elektronisch afluisteren.

I’ve written previously about how embedded Google, Inc. is with the Democratic Party and the Obamasphere in particular.

I was told by many that it was the stuff of tin-foil hats to believe that Google was in the tank for Democrats. They’re just working with clients after all! Why, Romney and Republicans could’ve just as easily worked with them! This isn’t partisan!

Well, now, this is just in from Bloomberg/Businessweek: Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, one of Obama’s biggest boosters, is bankrolling a new for-profit endeavor being run by former Obama tech staffers that will be working exclusively for Democrats, as well as some corporate clients, in future.

“During the 2012 campaign, Barack Obama’s reelection team had an underappreciated asset: Google’s (GOOG) executive chairman, Eric Schmidt. He helped recruit talent, choose technology, and coach the campaign manager, Jim Messina, on the finer points of leading a large organization. “On election night he was in our boiler room in Chicago,” says David Plouffe, then a senior White House adviser. Schmidt had a particular affinity for a group of engineers and statisticians tucked away beneath a disco ball in a darkened corner of the office known as “the Cave.” The data analytics team, led by 30-year-old Dan Wagner, is credited with producing Obama’s surprising 5 million-vote margin of victory.

Schmidt thought enough of the team that when the campaign ended, he put up several million dollars to keep its core together as a new consulting firm, Civis Analytics, run by Wagner and staffed by two dozen of his former employees. They share ownership with Schmidt, its sole investor.

Govt considers, cyber, security, advice, group

Die Regierung bedenkt Aufstellen einer Ratsgruppe auf wie öffentliches Bewusstsein um die Risiken der cyber-Sicherheit zu verbessern, während auf Internet basiertes Verbrechen zunehmend weit verbreitet wird.

In the first decade of the 21st century, technology made it possible to download music, movies or televisions shows from the Internet to your computer. Before this, you had to go to a music store physically and purchase an album or CD if you wanted to hear the latest from your favorite artists. With this new technology, the entire scope of how you obtain your music has changed.

But as the technology advances rapidly, unlawful downloading sites also places on a huge number. And with these, internet users who illegally download online could soon receive warning notices from the nation’s five major internet service providers. Consumers who are using peer-to-peer software are the number one target this week of the Copyright Alert System.

Whose IP address has been detected sharing files illegally will be prompt by an Internet service provider with which will be given up to six chances to stop before the warning notice take action.

Furthermore, internet service provider will temporarily slowing their connection, or redirecting Internet traffic until they acknowledge they received a notice or review educational materials about copyright law. Consumers who maintain they have been wrongly accused would be forced to pay $35 to appeal the decision. The fee would be reimbursed if they prevail.

Proponents say the focus is on deterring the average consumer rather than chronic violators. The director of the organization behind the system, Jill Lesser of the Center for Copyright Infringement, said in a blog post Monday that the program is “meant to educate rather than punish, and direct (users) to legal alternatives.”

Each Internet provider is expected to implement their own system. The program gives each customer five or six “strikes” after music or Film Company has detected illegal file-sharing and lodged a complaint. The first alerts are expected to be educational, while the third and fourth would require the customer to acknowledge that they have received the warnings and understand their behavior is illegal. The final warnings are expected to lead to “mitigation measures,” such as slowing person’s Internet connection speeds.
